The Downside of Having a “Sexy” MMO Character

February 2, 2020

I want to shout out https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoBestFriendsPlay/ one of the best subreddits for talk and news about video games, anime, manga and even more. Plus the humor on the site is top-notch; there were a lot of dark nights that I got through by reading and participating in the subreddit. So thanks guys!!!

A few years back I used to play an MMORPG called Vindictus. I quite enjoyed it and probably spent a little too much money on it. I loved my character, a dual-wielding chain blade heroine whose class was named Vella. I decided to make her a beauty to look at, tall, long red hair, bright blue eyes. She was *cough well-endowed cough* and thicc in the right way. Her “inner armor” was fishnet and she had a strategically placed tattoo. I also took the lips tattoo and placed them over her own lips so it looked like she had a sultry pout. She had an incredible wardrobe — invisible armor, short skirts, just wings, high heels. And she dressed all in red.

I don’t have any pictures of her now, and there is no way I am going back into the game to get pictures-I’m out and I have to stay out. I do have a picture of when she was cosplaying as a human!Starscream:

At first, it was nice being noticed as a “sexy” character. Entering into a party once, a guy stammered “Oh wow, hey, do you wanna go for coffee sometime?” Another guy hung around like a little puppy, saying how pretty I was and that he liked looking at me. Male guild members asked me how I was doing every day. One guy ended his sentences to me with the word ‘love’. These things made me feel good about my character.

But then other people started talking to me. They also said how sexy I was, but then they went on to say what they would do to me, some even saying what they were doing to me at that very moment. And it wasn’t just regular stuff, it was some of the foulest things you could ever imagine. Most times I just disconnected from the game when this happened and blocked the player. But you could only block so many people and you couldn’t always disconnect. There were times when I was in a raid or crafting and had to deal with attention I did not want.

Eventually I just decided to quit. It wasn’t just me who was being harassed, but I noticed other female characters being harassed as well. I don’t know how they felt about it, but I didn’t want to be in an environment like that. I’d love to play another MMORPG someday, but I just don’t know if I could bring myself to do so. If anyone has a similar story, I would welcome you sharing it. Thanks for reading.
